🎧 Listen to article read by Nicoletta:

Inclusion is a right, not a concession.

Does not depend on the good will of someone, nor to be generosity: it is a human right fundamentalrecognized by the The UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (CRPD), ratified by Italy with Law 18/2009, and from the european and national regulations on the non-discrimination.

What does it mean in practice

People with disabilities have the right to:

  • participate fully in the life, social, cultural, professional and political
  • equal opportunities compared to the other
  • accessibility, reasonable accommodation, and protection from discrimination

The State and society have the duty to remove physical barriers, cultural and social that prevent the full participation.

Because it is not a concession

A concession:

  • can be denied, or withdrawn
  • depends on the the will of others
  • create inequality

A right to:

  • is guaranteed by the law
  • one does not negotiate
  • must be it should always be respected

When theinclusion is treated as concession, it reinforces a vision of the welfare state, and denies the equal dignity

It is not “fit” the people to the system, but to make the system accessible:

  • services and environments inclusive
  • policies and procedures fair
  • autonomy and self-determination for all

In summary

  • Inclusion is not a please
  • The inclusion is not optional
  • The inclusion is a right chargeable
  • Do not thanks to a law
