FAQ – What is the ableist discrimination and how to recognize it

What is the ableism?

L’abilismo it is a form of discrimination towards the people with disabilities.

It is based on thewrong idea people who did not disability is “the most normal” or “more capable”, excluding those who live a different condition.

How is it manifested?

Can be clear (to deny an opportunity, create physical barriers or digital), or thin — like when you use words pietistiche or you treat people with disabilities as “heroes” or “objects of compassion.”

Common examples:

  • Say “confined to a wheelchair” instead of “uses a wheelchair”.
  • Praise daily actions (“what courage, exit only!”).
  • Speak to the place of someone who has a disabilities.
  • Ignore the architectural barriers and accessibility digital.

Why is that a problem?

Because theabilismo limits participation, dignity and the rights of persons with disabilities, fueling stereotipi and cultural obstacles.

How can we counteract that?

  • Listening to right the persons with disabilities.
  • Using a respectful language and inclusive.
  • Pretending accessibility in the spaces, services and communication.
  • Educating more young to respect and diversity.
  • Intervening in front of discriminatory behaviour.
