When a party becomes a trauma

“How can you hunt little girl a carnival party?”

Not for a fight between children.
Not on a whim.
But because it has a disability.

It happened during a Carnival party — the symbol of joy, colours and light-heartedness. A a child with a disability was cleared, excludingleft out.

Not from the other children.
But by the decision of an adult.

And in that moment, a celebration has turned into something that no child should live by:

  • humiliation,
  • solitude,
  • sense of not belonging.

Carnival party and exclusion: the invisible pain of the children

The Carnival should be the time of freedom, of the masks and laughter.

A moment in which each child can feel equal to the other, without labels.

For the children with disabilitieshowever , the reality is often different.

Be excluded in front of the other it not only means not join the party.
It is to feel wrong. You do not need. Too.

Is a silent griefis difficult to explain, but deep.
Because in childhood the need to belong is as vital as that of being loved.

When are the adults to teach the exclusion

Children are not born with the prejudice.
Learn.

If an adult decides that a child with disabilities may not stay, the message goes to all the others, is devastating:

  • Who is different it can be removed
  • The inclusion is optional
  • The feelings of others count for less the convenience

So it educates allindifference.
So it builds discrimination.

It is not just a party: it is a social signal

We often indigniamo for bullying, isolation, and violence among children.

But we forget that all this comes very first.

Is born when a child learns that exclude is acceptable.
When he sees that no one intervenes.
When he understands that the more fragile it can be left behind.

For children with disabilities, these experiences add up over time, creating emotional barriers much more difficult to break than the physical ones.

Inclusion of children: a responsibility of all

Accommodate a child with a disability is not an act of generosity:

  • Is normal.
  • Is civilization.
  • Is education.

Because the true inclusion is not “make space, if possible.”
It is not put into question the the right to be.

The child should be the safest place in the world, not the one where you learn what it means to be rejected.

Has not only a girl

  • Has been excluded from the right to belong.
  • Was the wound the trust in adults.
  • Has been betrayed the very idea of community.

When a child with a disability is removed, not only loses a party.
She loses a piece of security, of self-esteem, of confidence in the other.

And the most difficult question remains this:

the company we are building, if we do not know protect the most vulnerable?

Not to remain a spectator: the inclusion starts with you

If you believe that every child, with or without disabilities, have the right to feel accepted, respected, and part of the community, not to remain silent.
